Health Record Research Request (R3) is a core service of Health Sciences, managed by the Chief Research Informatics Officer (CRIO), sponsored in part by the Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute and Institute for Precision Medicine. Pitt and UPMC desire to make clinical data available and clinical systems changes for research. Under the CRIO, on behalf of UPMC, DBMI staff provision data for research (in some cases as Honest Brokers) primarily via our Research Data Warehouse, Neptune.

R3 is this service or process of provisioning UPMC clinical data, authorizing additional UPMC data sources and systems changes for research. R3 is available for use by researchers of the University of Pittsburgh, and for UPMC projects requiring research data and systems. To engage R3 please use the R3 Intake Form (less than 30 seconds to fill out including principal investigator contact information and pasting in a brief project description). R3 team can be contacted with any questions at healthr3@pitt.edu.

After R3 Intake is successfully submitted, the next step in the R3 workflow is to discuss feasibility of the request.
After submission, please make an appointment remotely via R3 online bookings at a time that works for your PI and team.

Download The R3 Introduction PowerPoint

For Limited Data Sets, go to this website and click “UPMC Data Use Agreement for Limited Data Set.” That document is submitted (unsigned by UPMC) with your IRB protocol. Also, if R3 is being used as Honest Broker, after reviewing your draft protocol, R3 will provide the honest broker assurance document for you to upload with your protocol.
